ROOSTERS/COCKS

Males less than a year old are cockerels. Adult male chickens over the age of one year are known as cocks or roosters. Roosters can usually be differentiated from hens by their striking plumage of long flowing tails and shiny, pointed feathers on their necks. Roosters crow because they hear other roosters crowing. A rooster's crowing (a loud and sometimes shrill call) is a territorial signal to other roosters. However, crowing may also result from sudden disturbances within their surroundings. The morning call your hear on the farm every morning is actually the rooster crowing "cock-a-doodle-doo"., to show that a certain place in the farnyard is their turf, to try and assert their authority over another rooster, or even to gloat when a hen cackles after laying an egg.
