Dogs
The dog's senses include vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch and sensitivity to the earth's magnetic field. They have acquired the ability to understand and communicate with humans and they are uniquely attuned to our behaviours. Dogs have advanced memory skills and are able to read and react appropriately to human body language such as gesturing and pointing, and to understand human voice commands. Dogs really do deserve their title of ‘man’s best friend’. They’re loyal, intelligent, devoted and affectionate – and are known to improve our physical and mental health. Dogs’ eyes contain a special membrane, called the tapetum lucidum, which allows them to see in the dark. Dogs and humans have the same type of slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement and during this REM stage dogs can dream. The twitching and paw movements that occur during their sleep are signs that your pet is dreaming. The reason dogs curl up is because of an age-old instinct to keep themselves warm and to protect vital organs while they sleep. Dogs sweat through the pads of their feet and dogs pant to cool themselves. It was recently discovered that dogs do see in colour, just not as vivid as we see.
