Dolphins
Dolphins are believed to be very intelligent. Female dolphins are called cows, males are called bulls and young dolphins are called calves. Despite the fact that they live underwater and can hold their breath for up to 7 minutes, dolphins must come to the surface to breathe air. Bottlenose dolphins have excellent vision both above and below the water. When dolphins look at objects under the water, they produce an oily substance that covers their eyes to protect them. Dolphins can also see very well at night. They also have an excellent sense of hearing. Bottlenose dolphins communicate with each other using a collection of chirps, whistles, and clicks. Dolphins produce high-frequency clicks that humans can’t hear. They use these clicks in a sonar system called echolocation. When the clicking sound reaches an object, it bounces back to the dolphin as an echo. Dolphins can process this information to determine the shape, size, speed, distance, and location of the object.
