Robin

Robins are a friendly bird of about 3 inches high and are grey or brown in colour, with a red tummy. Male robins are more brightly coloured than females. Robins will nest almost anywhere, the nest is made from dead leaves and moss and is lined with hairs. Robins are omnivorous, eating everything from fruit to spiders and love to snatch earthworms out of the ground. The robin is a common visitor to gardens and once attracted to food put out on a bird table, it will return to it all winter. They can become extremely tame by repeated offers of food. Some will feed from the hand. Robins are one of the first birds to start the dawn chorus and one of the last to stop singing at night, even in the winter. The robin has a distinctive and beautiful sounding call. It will sing to proclaim territory and attract a mate and usually sings all year round, although it is quieter in late summer when it moults. In winter, the robin puffs up its plumage to insulate its body against cold winds. Robins are common in towns and cities as well as in the country.
